Monday morning you drag your sleepy self out of bed after you’ve already hit the snooze button five times.
You realize it’s too late for breakfast and coffee so as you’re running out the door, shoes in hand, your breakfast is a sad plain bagel on a paper plate because you didn’t even have time for cream cheese or to actually sit down for one minute to eat it.
You sit down at your overly cluttered desk, in your cluttered office, see the massive “to-do” list in front of you as well as 100 emails from the weekend. You then realize you also have laundry to do, dishes and you haven’t gotten that workout in a few weeks…okay months.
It’s happened to all of us.
It’s frustrating and because Monday is the first day of the work week, it tends to set the tone for the rest of the week. Making our weeks feel like they drag on forever. (cue “Squints” from the “Sandlot”.)
And so the story continues until we decide to change it.
Because it doesn’t have to be this way.
I’m giving you 9 things to do on Sunday for a more productive week to help you stay on track, feel more organized and make your life just a little bit easier.
9 Things to do on Sunday for a more Productive Week
1. Start your week on Sunday.
Sundays are traditionally a day of rest and relaxation before the long week ahead. But what if instead of only resting one day, we spread out our tasks so we rest more during the week.
Take a look at some of the big tasks that prevent you from accomplishing your work on Monday morning, or things that really stress you out. Like looking at a pile of dirty laundry (guilty).
Whether it’s cleaning off your desk, picking up the house or meal prepping, cross it off of your list on Sunday so you can get straight to work on Monday with a clearer mind.
2. Meal Prep Three Days in Advanced
Meal prepping is key to reducing those crazy cravings and it helps keep you just a little bit saner during the week.
Grab your family and write down three days worth of meals you’d like to all eat together. This way the whole family is involved in cooking the meals, which makes everyone feel good and you get to spend some time together.
Also, if your kids are old enough, have them pick out and prep some after-school snacks they’d like to have.
You can also bulk prep certain foods like veggies, fruits or your protein for quick snacks when you’re hungry. That way no one has to stand in front the fridge for ten minutes with the door open whining about how hungry they are and how there’s nothing to eat. (yes, this was me as a kid…okay, okay, it’s still me.)
3. Clean out your Fridge from the Week Before
You know that stinky cheese that always seems to get pushed to the back of your fridge then gets forgotten for a few weeks…or months? (oops)
Take stock of your fridge and see what needs to eaten and what needs to be tossed. This way you can reduce food waste by eating those foods that really need to be eaten in the next few days.
You can also save some money at the grocery store because you know exactly what you’re going to need to get and what you don’t.
Not only that, there’s just something about starting the week with a nice clean and organized fridge!
4. Set out yours and your kid’s Clothes for the Next Few Days
Finding something to wear that fits the school dress code and makes you feel good can be an epic challenge in the morning especially when you’re rushing.
Lay out a few days worth of clothes in advanced to reduce the stress and avoid shuffling through the dirty laundry bin to find a t-shirt that doesn’t smell like it’s four days old. (yup, I do that too.)
You can also do this with your gym clothes and lay them right next to your bed or alarm clock so they’re right there and ready to go.
5. Pack to-go Bags for School and/or Work the Night Before
Are you seeing a trend here? Everything is pretty much done the night before, not the day of. Doing these tasks the day before will help to really reduce that stress and anxiety in the mornings.
Pack up everything you’re going to need for work in a bag for the next day and have it sitting by the front door so you don’t forget it.
This also means packing up your breakfast and lunch for the workday.
Also, pack up your kid’s school bags, gather any homework and pack up lunches and breakfast that are easy to eat on the go.
This way, the kids can’t do “the dog ate my homework” bit and you won’t be running around trying to find those really important notes you needed for work.
6. Schedule your To Do List the Night Before

When’s the last time you had more than five minutes in the morning to have a couple sips of painfully hot coffee and get a glance at the morning headlines?
When you schedule out your day the night before you won’t miss those important tasks you forgot to write down in the morning rush.
You’ll also be able to sleep better because your brain won’t be churning through the night trying to remember all the tasks you have for the week ahead.
Scheduling out your day the night before can be as little as writing down your top three priorities for the next day. That way, you get your biggest tasks done and out of the way early.
We all know our schedules can change on a dime, so it’s best to get those big tasks done right away.
Doing this also makes those smaller tasks seem less difficult and much easier to do.
7. Schedule in Self Care & Family Time
At the end of the day, the week is busy and you end up rushing past your family and maybe only getting those few precious minutes with them at dinner time.
Making sure to schedule in a fun family activity like a game night, a movie and popcorn or even just a fun few hours at the water park will ensure you get time with your family to catch up and enjoy that special time together.
When we don’t schedule things, even those things that are important to us they can slip away and you realize it’s already 9 pm and the kids are in bed.
You also want to make sure you are carving out time for yourself to recharge and recenter.
Maybe that’s 30 minutes of quiet time to read a few chapters of a book or doing a quick meditation session.
Even with just 30 minutes alone, you’ll feel more relaxed, much more recharged and ready to conquer the full week ahead of you.
8. Put the Phones Away and Get Outside
The absolute best thing we can do for our mental health and wellbeing is to put our phones and laptops down and get outside in nature.
A little social media blackout never hurt anyone.
By putting down our phones we are not giving anyone else our energy, we are not allowing social media, the news or anything else to get our attention.
That in itself is extremely refreshing and will give you new life when you wake up Monday morning.
Use this time for a family nature scavenger hunt, go for a hike, have a picnic or just lay on the grass and try to figure out what types of animals the clouds look like.
If You Want To Have Your Most Productive Week, You Must Plan For Your Most Productive Week
This may seem like a no-brainer but with afterschool activities, the laundry, the car, the dishes and a job our priorities can sometimes be pushed to the back burner.
Utilize Sunday to clean up around the house, cook a few meals with your family and take time for yourself.
By utilizing Sunday to get those few tasks done, you won’t believe how much more productive you’ll feel when you wake up Monday morning.
